Alfred Sommerfeld went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Tuesday July 9th, 2019. He passed peacefully in his sleep. He was born in Colfax, WA on November 25th 1935 to Bessie and Ernest Sommerfeld. He had three sisters and one brother, Margie Stone, MaryAnn Mitchell, Freda Ward, and Bobby Sommerfeld.
He graduated from Colfax High School and joined the United States Air Force where he served honorably for 28 years. He traveled several countries around the world, Vietnam, Korea, Germany, Thailand, only to name a few. He was able to have his wife Fran Sommerfeld and children Shirley, Jerry, Larry, Teresa and Garry live in Okinawa and Taiwan and experience life in other countries.
After retiring from the Air Force, and from Whitman County Tax Assessor, he raised Arabian horses in Oaksdale, WA until his wife at that time passed away. He loved to travel and spend time with family and friends from Georgia to Minnesota to Washington State and Montana where he lived with his daughter Shirley until his death.
He was a very loving, caring, and talented man. He researched our family tree back to the 1800s and was still working on it. He created beautiful one-of-a-kind jewelry that he would surprise his family and friends with as gifts as often as he was able. He was always there to lend a helping hand for anyone in need.
He Loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with all his heart and soul. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax, WA.
He is survived by his five children: Shirley, Jerry, Larry, Garry Sommerfeld and Teresa Marie Russell. His seven grandchildren: Tiffany, Natalie, Sarah, Josh, Sandi, Aurora, and Hayden. His fourteen great grandchildren with one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bobby, and his wife Fran.
His Christian funeral service is Thursday July 11th at 2:00 pm at Christ the King Lutheran Church. (759 Newman Lane, Billings Montana 59101) Rev. Ryan D. Wendt officiating.
Reception to follow after the funeral service and military honors at the church. Per his wishes, Alfred will be laid to rest at the family plot in Oaksdale, Washington at a later date.
