Stephen “Steve” Ketterling was born the 10th of 14 children to Adam and Mabel Ketterling on September 13, 1946. He passed away on March 9, 2019.
He graduated from Huntley Project in 1966 and enlisted in the US Army serving in Korea. Upon his return, he married Sharon Flegler. Steve and Sharon raised two boys, Stevie and Chad, in the Billings area. Steve took pride in his boys, living for the next sporting event whether it be a track meet or a baseball game. It did not matter the event, Steve was there to support his boys. Being a dad meant everything to Steve, and he made sure his children knew how proud he was of them.
He built houses with his brother, Lawrence, for a few years before going to work for School District #2 as a custodian at Ponderosa and later Lewis & Clark Middle School. Steve loved his job at the school as he treated it with utmost importance. He loved spending time with kids and would go above and beyond his role as he built relationships with the students during his lunch duties. Even after retiring, Steve was not ready to completely say bye to the kids, returning to work during lunches until his health had declined.
He was happiest when attending a West High sporting event, pitching horseshoes, bowling, or any event his grandchildren participated in. There wasn’t a game, graduation, school concert, or move that Steve missed. If you were to walk into a West High basketball game any given night, you would find Steve, a staple, under the southside basket with some of his dear friends. Steve took his grandchildren to the games as some of their first memories and continued to go as his grandchildren played and cheered at West High themselves.
Steve had a distinctive laugh which made you laugh with him. One that will forever be remembered bringing smiles to those faces of those who were able to hear it.
Steve is survived by wife, Sharon; sons, Stevie and Chad; granddaughters, Karissa (AJ) and Mariah; grandson, Jordan stationed with the military in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and their mother, Laura Ketterling.
He is also survived by his sisters, Violet Steiner, Margaret Hice, Leona (Jim) Samson and Geraldine Belless, all of Billings; brother, Adam of Hardin; sisters-in-law, Delores and Geraldine Ketterling; and many nieces and nephews, including Jana Samson Reich.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Harold, Lawrence, Leonard and Leroy; sisters, Dora Jones, Betty Clark, Florence Ring and Donna Hubbard.
