Janet  (Jan) Butorovich

April 16, 1932-July 4, 2018

Jan Butorovich of Billings died in a tragic automobile crash near Acton, MT on July 4th.

She was born Janet Ruth Johnston to George and Susan Johnston in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jan’s father worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and as a child she and her brother John lived in a variety of communities across the west.

Jan was a proud graduate of the University of Puget Sound and she served as an Occupational Therapist until her retirement. In her professional career she created meaningful work opportunities for residents at the Montana State Hospital, where she worked and raised her five children. She continued her career working at the Billings Clinic Psychiatric Center where she developed and implemented a new treatment program, Pet Enhanced Therapy.

Although she will be missed, there is a serendipity that our mom’s earthly adventures ended on Independence Day. She had a grand spirit of adventure and was fiercely independent.

Jan was a committed volunteer, who was honored with a lifetime achievement award by Casa of Yellowstone County, as well as being an honoree recipient of Billings Salute to Women. She also walked alongside many on their journey to life’s end as a Hospice Volunteer, and she delivered until recently for Meals on Wheels.

Jan will be missed by many friends and family members. Life without the lady in party pants will mean less sunshine in the lives of her children, Susan and Tony Miller (Judith Gap, MT), George and Leslie Butorovich (Garden Grove, CA), Nancy Nelson (Great Falls, MT), and Jenny and Bill Given (Dillon, MT). Her 14 Grandchildren have many fun stories to share of our Matriarch and will continue her legacy of adventure and family with her 15 + great grandchildren. In addition to family, we wish to recognize mom’s dear friends and neighbors, those who went on weekly adventures, and those who cared for her pets and plants while she was off and away discovering another corner of our world.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother John Johnston and her son, Steve Thomas Butorovich. It has been said the fireworks on Wednesday were really Steve celebrating mom’s arrival into heaven.

Cremation has taken place. A brief service and meal will be held at Heights Family Funeral Home, 733 W.Wicks Lane, Billings, MT 59105 on Saturday July 14th at 4:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice, CASA of Yellowstone County, or the charity of your choosing.
